Ángel Rama atribuye a los modernistas una extraordinaria capacidad de asimilar lo externo al continente para convertirlo en parte de la cultura propia. : “… los escritores modernistas fueron más sofisticados y también más avezados comediantes…” (152). Este logro no lo habían conseguido en su totalidad sus antecesores los románticos, debido entre otros factores al “manejo de esquemas intelectuales copiados fervorosamente de los franceses o norteamericanos.” (152).
En relación al término “comediante” y al carnaval, Heraldos nos presenta una fiesta: una fila de mujeres anunciadas con fanfarrias, una tras otra, como en un desfile. Estas aparecen de forma ordenada y su llegada se anuncia por todo lo alto y –suponemos- alegremente.
Sin embargo, el título ya nos anuncia lo oculto, lo no evidente, con lo que Darío juega para distraer la atención y lograr un efecto poético pero descarnado. Heraldos, con relación al carnaval, tiene el elemento de es el factor de doble sentido que contiene el poema y la contradicción entre forma y contenido. Para empezar, se trata de una estructura aparentemente sencilla: nueve estrofas, compuesta cada una de dos versos excepto la octava, sin rima regular. El primer verso trata sobre una o más mujeres y el segundo, de los heraldos que anuncian su llegada. Esta enumeración provoca el efecto que describe Alexis de Tocqueville: “se procurará asombrar más bien que agradar, y se tratará de excitar las pasiones más bien que encantar el gusto” (434).
Darío juega con los personajes con ánimo universalista, incorporando mujeres de la literatura y la tradición que conforman un ejemplo del eterno femenino occidental. Algunos personajes son mitos evidentes, como la bella Helena que provocó la destrucción de Troya, la reina Makheda que sedujo a Salomón. Otros son ambigüos, como Clorinda, que quizás es la ninfa Chloé, pero también podría ser Clorinda de Gerusalemme Liberata (1580) de Torquato Tasso.
Sin embargo, el protagonismo no es de las mujeres sino de los heraldos que anuncian su llegada a una fiesta o su paso por una calle donde los observadores contemplan la cabalgata. En este sentido, cada estrofa provoca un efecto de irrealidad puesto que los personajes no pueden ser mujeres reales anunciadas por animales, y lo evidente de su identidad literaria nos recuerda que sólo se trata de un poema, un juego de palabras que enmascaran el sentimiento de espera.
El efecto de sinestesia convierte al poema visual a la par que sonoro. Los heraldos, que tradicionalmente anuncian la llegada de los personajes con fanfarrias, en este caso lo hacen sin palabras: “el blancor de un cisne”. Este efecto visual sigue una lógica en algunas estrofas: a Aurora (la llegada del día) la anuncia “un resplandor que ciega mis ojos”. En otros casos la relación mujer-heraldo no es tan evidente, como sucede con Yolanda y la paloma. Esta relación de humanos (el caballero, los pajes) y animales (el pavo real, la corza blanca).
Sin embargo toda esta enumeración no sirve sino para introducir la broma final del comediante, la sorpresa de la fiesta: “¿Ella?/(No la anuncian. No llega aún)”. Nótese que Darío ha empleado incluso la tipografía para producir un efecto sonoro: Ella, en cursiva, sin signos de exclamación, y el paréntesis de la respuesta provoca en el lector la idea de un diálogo susurrado. De esta manera, la fiesta no está completa, el carnaval no tiene motivo de celebración. Las mujeres no son sino figuras que enmascaran a la mujer real, la que esperan los espectadores igual que el poeta Darío espera que lleguen los “talentos en el limbo”. Esto produce un efecto de insatisfacción en el lector, una impresión de fin que llega sin que la fiesta termine porque Ella no ha llegado aún, pero el poema sí se ha terminado.

Ayer estaba limpiando y me golpeó un olor fuerte a tabaco.

Era una de las cajas que me regaló Giulio, llena de colillas, que meto en agua y uso como veneno para los bichos que atacan mi menta.

A Giulio le dije "ci vediamo" en el aeropuerto de Eugene, cuando yo iba a NY y él a Chicago, a ver a su novia, y de allí a Italia, y de vuelta a Eugene, después del verano, cuando yo ya no estaré.

Soy culpable de no llevar los zapatos adecuados. De no haber tomado suficientes fotos. De enfadarme porque se me mojan las gafas. De caminar deprisa. De no pararme cinco segundos a mirar la lluvia caer. De no salir a bailar cuando para de llover.

Soy culpable de no quererte lo suficiente, de saber que me voy y no lamentarlo, de saber que quiero abandonarte por dinero, siempre por dinero (pero no sólo eso, pero tampoco importa).

Tengo otro blog, http://www.pikunikku.net/xirimiri/ en el que posteo menos porque es creativo. Es decir, hago mis pinitos como escritora. Le tengo mucho más cariño que a este porque es de Ine, lo matiene ella, lo paga ella y es suyo. Está bien que me deje estar allí. Y el nombre me encanta. Me hace pensar en los veranos que pasábamos juntas en Elche. La cuestión es que después de un hilo abierto en Spaniards, algunos usuarios han puesto sus experiencias en el extranjero para combatir el mundo de algodón de azúcar que presentan programas como "Españoles en el Mundo" o como leñe se llame. Que no me parece mal ese programa, que tampoco todas las historias son tan maravillosas, y que para amarguras ya está la vida real. Pero que  no dice lo malo que puede resultar el irse a otro país.
En fin, que puse un resumen de mi experiencia en Nova en Spaniards. Como no tengo ganas de repetir lo que pasó, pongo aquí alguna de las muchas entradas que creé en aquella época, después de la caída, del desastre y de todo lo que no lloré.

Estas son algunas cosas que tengo y las saqué de la basura. Aquí en Oregon (en Nebraska la gente también lo hacía) monta sus "yard sales" y vende cosas que ya no quiere muy baratas. A veces también le ponen una etiqueta de "free" y las dejan al lado del basurero, no tocando el contenedor de deshechos orgánicos, pero al lado. Estas son algunas de las cosas que me han salido gratis.

El cajón para las patatas, las cebollas, la harina etc.

Un cajoncito para ropa.

Una estantería, la encontré ayer y la convertí en mueble para zapatos.

El proyecto sobre Relatos de profesores en el extranjero está en marcha. Las colaboraciones son bienvenidas. Se trata de un (futuro) libro que recoge las experiencias de docentes por todo el mundo.

Otro verano que se me va (o me voy yo, no sé). Estos son algunos de los recuerdos que me quedan para cuatro meses hasta que vuelva (mientras siga volviendo).

Me fui antes de que el Paraíso decidiera dar flores. No he visto este árbol en flor jamás (dice mi padre que es como una lluvia dorada que huele de maravilla).

El "rincón Ibiza", nombrado así por Airin, la defensora número uno de la piscina y el campo como refugio contra el mundo, que sólo se ha bañado una vez este verano (está lejos, pero no tanto como yo).

Este recuerdo no es de verano, porque hace demasiado calor para estar en el banco. Lo veré en invierno, si nada me impide volver.

Un momento de fiesta (los santos de los chicos) y hasta yo riendo como una loca.

Sea and sand

Not everything is magical woods in Oregon. Ali, Alexandra and I went to the ocean because Ali was interested in hiking the highest dune in the state of Oregon. It was a short but hard hiking! I had never walked on this kind of sand so I found it hard.

However, it was worthwhile. Okey, I guess I can say now that I have been on top of the highest dune in Oregon...

Our trip started with a visit to a lighthouse. I don't remember the name so I will ask Ali. It's not the most beautiful lighthouse in Oregon, I find the Haceda one much nicer.

This is my name on the top of the Dune. It lasted for, at least, thirty seconds. It was really windy and freezing there!

This is when we were going down from the top. There were around 1 or 2 kilos of sand inside my shoes!

Tela, our usual leader, wasn't really happy this time. I guess she doesn't like the sand...

Ali and I trying the cold Pacific Ocean waters. It's the third time in my life that I am by the Pacific (the first one was in Japan, the second one in San Francisco). This is, at last, my first (and short) bath in the Pacific Ocean! It was cooooooold!!

Alexandra, with more common sense than us, didn't try the cold water.

Finally, the tree adventure takers (sorry Tela is not in the picture) in the State of Oregon. Thanks for a good day, Ali and Alex!!

The campus in bloom.

Friday was sunny (at last!) and I took my camera for going to campus. I had to bring some books back to the library (bye bye Winter term, hello Spring term), so I could take pictures of the trees that make the campus beautiful and scented.

First thing that I have to say is that I have no idea about trees' names. I think some of the pictures taken are magnolias and cherry trees. So I apologize if I am mistaken about any name.

This is one of my favourite trees because I have been watchin its blooming carefully, due I go that way everyday in my home-campus way.

I went with my bike today because it was sunny at times. And here are the pictures that I took.

I think that Ali told me that these bushes are Huckleberries (can you see the white berries), but I am not sure, I'll ask her soon.

Okey, I am not an expert in trees. The name of this one is Acebo in Spanish, I think in English is Holly tree.

My new room

I left my beautiful but far-from-everything paradise and I am closer to campus and *life*. I miss my two Japanese pixies, but my new roommate is a love.

I am kind of used of changing places so it took me two nights to rearrange my life. This is my new room.

It's much smaller than the other one. Which means less time to get it warm. 

I always find a good place to put my accesories.

Good use of curtains for the earrings.

Any corner can become a place of pleasure.

A convenient kitchen and space to have dinner.

I am living in two weeks. The reason is that I am too far from everything and the new room is only five minutes from the Campus, and then from the downtown. Spring is coming, so time for having walks will increase.

So I will say goodbye to this lovely place:

Too cold.

And usually happens after Christmas, which makes me feel homesick and lonely.

Making kimchee

San Mi had promised time ago to show us how to make kimchee, and after the pumpkin adventure we were looking for new experiences. So we meet upstairs and after a delicious bowl of beef noodles made by Jessica, we started to follow San Mi's instructions.

Setting the scene; napa cabbage prepared for the experiment.

First thing was to put salt in the cabbage leaves, and mixing them.

Coarse and sea salt, please, not mineral salt!

The salt has to set in the leaves, so we started preparing the sauce.

Basically is ginger, carrots, and lots of garlics. Oh yeah, you better have dinner with this kimchee, unless you don't care not being socially accepted anywhere. Man, we used LOTS of garlic. And of course the red hot pepper.

This fish sauce (I don't remember the name...)

Look at the green onions. We would cut them and add them to the sauce.

So the orange bowl would be for the big mix.

Using gloves, otherwise our hands would smell like garlic forever.

This is the result: deliciuos homemade kimchee that will last some weeks. Thanks, San Mi!
